The dual n-back task, explained.

Dual n-back is a cognitive training task originally developed by researchers studying working memory and fluid intelligence. In the dual n-back task, you are simultaneously presented with two independent streams of stimuli — a visual position and an auditory letter — and must decide whether each matches what appeared exactly N steps earlier.

The "dual" refers to tracking two modalities at once. The "n-back" refers to how far back in time you must remember. At 2-back you compare the current stimulus to what occurred 2 trials ago; at 3-back, three trials ago. Each level is substantially harder than the last.

Unlike many brain training games, the dual n-back task has been replicated in peer-reviewed research across dozens of independent laboratories. The core finding: consistent dual n-back training improves both working memory capacity and fluid intelligence — your ability to reason through new problems you have never encountered before.

Why this game is different

Adaptive dual n-back difficulty

The game adjusts the N level in real time based on your accuracy. You always train at your cognitive threshold — the sweet spot where learning happens fastest.

Two independent channels

Visual positions and spoken letters update independently. This dual-channel design is what makes the n-back task uniquely effective — it prevents verbal rehearsal shortcuts and forces genuine working memory engagement.

Progress tracking

Every dual n-back training session is logged. Your average N level, accuracy per modality, and session streaks are charted over time so you can see your working memory grow.

Global leaderboard

Compare your n-back level against other players worldwide. The dual n-back game community spans researchers, students, and performance-focused professionals.

How it works

Simple to learn.
Hard to master.

01

Watch and listen

Each trial shows a square in one of 9 positions and plays a spoken letter. Two independent streams of information — simultaneously. This is the core of the dual n-back task.

02

Match N steps back

Decide whether the current position or letter matches what appeared exactly N trials ago. At 2-back you look 2 steps behind. At 3-back, three. The dual n-back training gets harder with each level.

03

Adapt and progress

The difficulty adjusts automatically based on your accuracy. You are always training at your optimal threshold — never too easy, never overwhelming. This is what makes dual n-back training effective.

How to get the most from dual n-back training

Research on the dual n-back task consistently shows that protocol matters as much as the game itself. Consistency, session length, and weekly frequency all affect how quickly your working memory improves. Use this guide to structure your dual n-back training from day one.

Experience level Starting N level Session length Sessions per week What to expect
Beginner 1-back or 2-back 10–15 min 4–5 days First sessions feel overwhelming — this is normal. Focus on one channel at a time if needed. Most beginners stabilise at 2-back within 1–2 weeks of daily dual n-back practice.
Intermediate 2-back to 3-back 15–20 min 5 days This is where the dual n-back task produces the largest documented gains in fluid intelligence. The jump from 2 to 3-back is the steepest; expect 2–4 weeks at this threshold.
Advanced 4-back and above 20–25 min 5 days Very few players maintain 4-back or higher. Performance at this level correlates strongly with top-percentile fluid intelligence scores. Training remains effective — the ceiling is high.

Not a claim.
A scientific consensus.

Questions about
Dual N-Back

What is Dual N-Back? +
Dual N-Back is a scientifically backed cognitive training exercise designed to improve working memory and fluid intelligence. Unlike standard memory games, the dual n-back task requires you to track two independent sequences simultaneously — a visual stimulus and an auditory stimulus — and compare each against what occurred N trials earlier.
Is the dual n-back game free to use? +
Yes, completely free. All core features including unlimited dual n-back training sessions, session history, adaptive difficulty, and the global leaderboard are available without payment. No credit card is required to create an account.
How often should I train to see results? +
Research suggests 15–20 minutes of dual n-back training per day, 4–5 days a week for 4–8 weeks to see meaningful cognitive gains. Consistency matters more than session length — daily short sessions outperform occasional long ones.
Why is it so hard to move from 2-back to 3-back? +
Each additional N level roughly doubles the cognitive load. This is completely normal — it means the dual n-back task is working. Most users spend 1–2 weeks at each level before reliably advancing. The difficulty is the point.
Can Dual N-Back help with ADHD? +
Several studies suggest dual n-back training improves sustained attention and inhibitory control, which are often affected in ADHD. It is not a medical treatment, but it is one of the few cognitive exercises with published evidence for attention improvement.
How do I know if I'm improving? +
Your session history and progress chart track accuracy and N-Back level over time. A consistent rise in your average N level is the clearest signal. Most users notice improvements in focus and recall within 2–3 weeks of regular dual n-back training.
